Welcome to our first News & Updates Blog Post! This will likely be a monthly post detailing and summarizing the changes happening at EcoKarma. We will also be using this as a platform to connect with you, by featuring reader questions, product suggestions, news articles and more.

What’s New Here?
If you receive our newsletter, you might have heard that we have a new contributor, Kaileigh W. who is an expert on sustainability and a great person to learn from. She will be sharing with you via regular article posts, and a new Blog section that will be up and running this quarter!
Not in the newsletter, was information about our Site Owner, Sharayah “Ray”, who will be writing her own blog about sustainability for the novice, along with her experiences with integrating the eco friendly lifestyle into her day-to-day. Her blog is titled “Ray’s Footprint” and she will be posting within the next couple of weeks.
Here’s a quick word from her about the project!
As a newcomer into the world of sustainability, I found that it might be equally as beneficial to our readers if I started a blog as I stumble into a more green lifestyle. Starting EcoKarma was originally to help other people educate themselves about sustainability- but the more we’ve grown as a site, the more I’ve realized how little I knew and understood about the topic.
EcoKarma is all about finding balance with our natural world, and every year I find myself reflecting on how far I’ve come as a contributor to sustainable living. Still I find myself looking ahead on how far I must go! I’ve decided to share that journey with others, and hopefully learn and grow with all of you as well.
As content creators, we also are content consumers, and we want that content to be quality. We are often coming across articles we want to share with all of you, and what a better place to do it than our blog? Here’s some of what we’ve come across lately that we just had to share!
Blue Planet II
As lovers of the planet, it should be no surprise that we also love nature documentaries- particularly those put out by the BBC. Blue Planet II is one that we’ve just been dying to sink our shark teeth into and we are happy to announce that it has arrived! You can check out more information regarding conservation efforts and how to watch it at the BBC Earth website.
We probably all see plenty of DIY articles out there, but it’s rare that one actually catches the attention long enough to actually read the whole thing! We were fascinated by this post on Mother Earth News about a couple in Idaho that built their own Wood Burning Hot Tub. Being in the PNW Hot Tubs are almost a must have in the winter, and we were stoked (pun intended) to see one using wood burning as a source of heat.
The couple, Jesse and Alyssa, have their own site Pure Living For Life, where they detail their journey of building their own property 100% from scratch, off the grid, and debt free. Check out their site if you’re interested in learning more about them and their adventure!
Love is in the Air
With Valentines Day just around the corner, and wedding season fast approaching, we felt this article from TreeHugger.com to be worth a click and scroll! It will give any bride or groom some money saving tips that keep your wedding fun and festive, without being too wasteful. Here are some quick sustainable wedding tips of our own:
- Paperless Invites- and no, we aren’t talking a Facebook group here. PaperlessPost.com gives you the option of making gorgeous invitations without the paper waste. They are personable, easily customizable, and will save you time and money.
- Less flowers- Did you ever think about what happens to the flowers after a wedding? Unfortunately, most end up in the garbage. If you are using live flowers, use the minimum. We suggest using local flowers, or maybe even you-pick wildflowers to save some money as well.
- Reusable Cups- Skip the plastic at the reception!
- Cloth Napkins- Often you can rent them for cheap if the venue doesn’t already provide them.
- Carpool Connection- If people are traveling to get to the wedding, start a Facebook group or email-chain to encourage carpooling to your event!
What’s Coming in 2018?
We have plans to roll out a lot of new concepts to our visitors and readers throughout the year, and we are excited to have you along for the journey. While we work on these new additions, we’d love to hear from you!
